How to Adapt Vintage Film Lenses to Mirrorless Cameras: Step-by-Step

Introduction

Adapting a vintage lens from the film era onto a modern mirrorless digital camera is completely possible in most cases.

This can be a great idea if you want to acquire high-quality lenses for your camera at a low price.

Below are the step-by-step instructions to adapt a lens.

1. Identify Your Camera’s Lens Mount

For example, if your camera is a Lumix GH4, type “Lumix GH4 lens mount” into your favorite search engine.

Search results.

For this example, the mount is therefore Micro 4/3 (Micro Four Thirds).

This will obviously vary depending on your specific camera.

2. Identify the Mount of the Lens You Want to Adapt

Most of the time, the seller will state the name of the lens mount in the description.

Here, the seller clearly specified that this lens was originally designed for cameras using the Olympus OM mount.

Otherwise, you will have to do a little bit of research.

Just like the first step, it won’t always be an Olympus OM mount.

3. Find the Right Adapter

In this case, we want to find an adapter that allows us to convert our Micro 4/3 camera mount to an Olympus OM lens mount.

So, we search on Google, or directly on the website of K&F (a well-known lens adapter manufacturer), for instance:

Micro 4/3 Adapter for Olympus OM Lens.

A Few Important Details

Do your research carefully before buying a lens, as there can sometimes be specific mechanical compatibility issues that prevent it from being adapted.

You must also understand that you will lose autofocus capability; focusing will have to be done entirely manually.

Likewise, the aperture controls will be operated directly from the lens ring, rather than through the camera body as you might be used to doing.

But you will get used to it very quickly.
