Photographers and Gear: a Love Story
Videos, blog posts, shorts, gear is everywhere.
On my youtube channel content about skills such as composition or creative process gets hundreds of times fewer views than gear reviews.
I was obsessed with gear too. I used dozens of cameras and lenses. In hindsight, I just wasted my time and should have worked on my skills instead.
But why do people focus so much on gear instead of skills such as composition then?
Why Everyone Avoid Videos About Composition and Creative Process in Photography
In fact, I can’t blame you for not clicking on youtube videos about composition. Because I do the same.
As I progressed and became a better photographer, I realised that most youtube content about composition is useless. It often sounds like the people making these videos have a superficial view of what composition is, when they simply lack a command of their subject. Or they are bad teachers.
Nevertheless, it is often useless garbage (like the golden ratio trend) made to be fun. And the promises like teaching you 40 techniques in 20 minutes to make you great at composition are just ridiculous.
You watch it, then you forget everything a minute later.
In these conditions, it is just normal to run away and see how you can upgrade your gear: at least you know there is a tangible gain there.
But in the end, it is not a good solution, because great photographs lie in the eye of the photographer not in gear.
But how to improve your skills while most of what you find on youtube is useless. Where can you find that?
What I offer
I am Rayhan Rahim Khan, a fine art contemplative photographer. In contemplative photography, a successful composition is not a simple bonus, but the very essence of this genre.
If the composition is unbalanced or lacks harmony, it will annoy the viewer and pull them out of their contemplation.
So, as you may have guessed, composition is not something I take lightly. It is a craft I have thought about and perfected over many years.
And thus, it is also something that I teach in the contact sheet posts on ElectroCroissant.
What I write on these lessons comes from years of thinking and writing about composition and creative process. Starting from concrete examples, I share with you the grammar and vocabulary that underpin the creation of successful photographs.
I publish a new contact sheet every two weeks and the $8 sub gives you access to everything published previously.
There is also a 3-day trial and the commitment is strictly month-to-month.
So forget superficial videos, just try the contact sheets and I am very sure that you will progress quickly.
And of course, don’t forget to subscribe to the youtube channel!
