The mistake that many amateur photographers make
Why do certain photographs touch us profoundly, while others, technically flawless, leave us completely indifferent?
There are countless photography tutorials available online:
- Camera comparisons
- How to use your camera
- Lighting techniques
- How to expose your photos correctly
- And so on.
But creativity is often forgotten or pushed into the background.
And that is a huge mistake.
If you are an amateur photographer, you take photographs primarily for your own enjoyment. For you, photography is above all an art form and a space of freedom.
Your approach is the opposite of the immediate performance mindset implied by many tutorials.
Creativity is what gives your photographs that extra soul – the element that makes them unique and personal.

The original images I create today are not the result of luck. They come from deep creative work, a process I document through my contact sheets.
The Importance of Creativity in Photography
An Analogy with Writing
Mastering the technical side of photography is similar to mastering grammar and spelling in writing. Creativity, however, is what allows you to write a novel that is genuinely interesting from a literary perspective.
Technical knowledge alone will not find for you the right subject, how to bring it to life, or engage the viewer. Creativity will.

How to Be Creative
Contrary to popular belief, creativity is not innate. It is a skill that can be developed.
But how do you become creative?
Creativity Does Not Come from Nowhere
Creation never emerges out of nothing. It is the result of deep and continuous work.
First, you absorb ideas and knowledge. Then, you connect them in an original way to create new works.
You can find inspiration in the work of other photographers, as well as painters and illustrators.

Reading photography books is an excellent way to enrich your photographic culture.
Building technical knowledge is not incompatible with photographic creativity. It is even a part of I also place great importance on technique. You may have noticed this through the many technical articles published on this site.
However, tutorials and guides can harm creativity when they are followed blindly and never questioned.
Never forget that technique should serve your personal vision, not to restrain it.
Building Your Creativity
However, working on your creativity does not mean becoming scattered or going in every direction. On the contrary, method and discipline will help you progress.
Creativity develops gradually by asking yourself questions and seeking answers. It is an ongoing process.
You need to take notes and reflect. For example, review your photos after every shoot. Analyze them and ask yourself what you were truly trying to express.

My Personal Method
As a photographic artist, cultivating creativity mainly comes down to two activities:
- Enriching my photographic culture
- Taking the time to analyze my photographs and identify areas for improvement
If you would like to see how I analyze my photos and draw conclusions that help me grow as both an artist and a photographer, I invite you to discover my contact sheets, where I break down my work and explain my artistic decisions.
