A Highly Regarded Lens
The Nikkor 28mm AI-S is highly appreciated, as reflected by its average price of around €300 and the many praises it receives.
One proof of its reputation is that Nikon continued producing this lens from 1981 until 2020 [1]. Its performance is recognized both on film and digital cameras.
A Versatile Lens
Excellent for Landscape and Close-Up Photography
From infinity focus down to 0.20 meters, image quality remains excellent.
Sharpness is very good, and photographs show no noticeable distortion.

A Floating Element Design
This consistency in performance is achieved thanks to a floating element system: much like a zoom lens, the distance between lens elements changes depending on the focusing distance in order to maximize image quality.

I have not personally tested it this way, but the lens has a reputation for producing excellent macro photographs when mounted on a reversing ring.
A Lens Worth Owning
Pleasant to Use
My copy has a few marks on the rear element, yet it still produces very satisfying images and remains extremely enjoyable to use.
The Nikkor 28mm AI-S is lightweight and takes up no more space than a classic 50mm lens.
Sample Images
I have taken some of my favorite photographs with this lens and have never been disappointed by its performance.

The Nikkor 28mm f/2.8 AI-S performs brilliantly both at close range and at infinity.
So, if you have €200-300 to invest in a wide-angle lens, the Nikkor 28mm AI-S – excellent for landscapes as well as macro photography when reversed – should be among the very first lenses you consider.
