The mist
When I saw the mist, I wanted to go outside.
Diffuse light and black silhouettes create a contemplative and introspective atmosphere that I like.
The place and the subject : La Loire
The level of the Loire is also high, which gave me opportunity to photograph the landscape in an unusual situation.
On the road to the Loire, a short passage in the city center of Orleans

The streets are empty, which give them a fairy atmosphere with the mist.
The first images are generally not the best. But there are necessary to warm up. I was also pressed to go to the Loire.

Finding the subject

Being aware of your surroundings
Even when photographing the landscape or taking contemplative photos, taking a good picture is sometimes about being aware of what happen around you. You have to actively observe and be reactive to seize the fleeting opportunities that will give you an unique and memorable image.
Without the boat, the image would be empty and uninteresting. When I saw the boat being drained by the current in my direction, I know there was a good story to be told. So I think of the composition during the few seconds before the boat come closer to my position.
Which image to choose
|
Why do I reject the second one

The composition is not satisfactory. The center space is empty and there are two elements to see at he both end of the image. We don’t understand what story the photograph wants to tell.
The black trees and the associated vanishing lines going to the top is what pop in the image. Thus our view is attracted to the right of the image, where there is nothing to see.
The interesting subject, the boat lost on the river, appears to be secondary with this composition.
The Final Photograph :

A small boat rushing down a foaming river on a misty day. A poetic and contemplative image that invite the beholder to daydream: Where the boat is going ? Why is it alone ?
This image works because the scene is intriguing. Beyond its aesthetic qualities, this photograph activates the imagination of the beholder.

Three successive plans

The image is divided into three successive plans :
- The naked winter trees at the first plan give depth to the images from a perspective standpoint.
- The rolling river where the boat is.
- The mist which make the river endless and accentuate the distress of the boat.

Showing the movement of the boat

To show that an object is moving, one technique consists into placing it on a side of the image. Basically put the object on where it comes from and leave empty the way it is coming to.
Here, the placement of the boat on the image allows us to understand that the boat is moving from left to right.
